How to Put a Website on the UNM Server

  1. Start off by clicking here to see ITS's instructions for Windows users (Mac users click here).
  2. Follow the instructions to download the configured SSH client (note that you will have to log in with your UNM NetID to access downloads)
  3. Find SSH in the first list of Windows programs and download it. Install Secure Telnet and FTP (the program you just downloaded).
  4. Go back to the original ITS page and follow the directions to Connect with SFTP.
  5. If you've never uploaded to the UNM server before, you must make a public_html folder before doing so (if you have uploaded previously, the public_html folder will likely already exist). In the Secure FTP window, the left pane shows the files on the computer you're currently using; the right pane allows you to see the files on the server. Right-click in the right pane and choose New Folder. A new folder appears in the right pane, with a blinking cursor; type public_html as the folder name and tap the ENTER key to set it.
  6. Double-click on the new public_html folder and, if you've never uploaded to the UNM server before, the right pane will now be empty (if you have previously uploaded, the pane may not be empty -- that's OK too).
  7. Use the left pane to navigate to the location of your website files on your computer and select all of them. Now right-click over one of the selected files and choose Upload. In a moment or two, you'll see all those file names appear in the right pane of the window. Go to FILE > DISCONNECT, then close the program.
  8. Open your browser and, in the address bar, type in http://www.unm.edu/~yourusername (your username is the part of your email address before the @ sign; for example, my UNM email address is lisatann@unm.edu, so my username is lisatann, and my web page lives at http://www.unm.edu/~lisatann). If you've uploaded a file with the name index.htm (or .html), and if you get lucky, you'll see it on the Web. However, it's equally possible that you'll see an error message that says you don't have permission to view the page. If that happens, follow the next few steps as well.
  9. Go to START > PROGRAMS > SECURE TELNET AND FTP, and choose the Telnet portion of the program. You'll have to log in again, and this time you'll find yourself in a text-based (command line) environment -- which means that, instead of clicking OK with your mouse to make something happen, you'll have to tap the ENTER key on the keyboard. You should see something like the screen below.

  11. At the terminal type question, just tap the ENTER key. At the first command prompt (the last line in the screenshot above), type webupdate and tap the ENTER key.
  12. Type exit and tap the ENTER key to disconnect.
  13. Go back to the browser and type in your web address once again to see your page (you might have to click the Refresh icon). If you can't see your home page, it probably means that you forgot to name a page index.htm or .html. (If that's the case, rename the page that is supposed to be your home page to index.htm and re-upload it.)
